Workshop Design

Day 1 morning: Introduction and Brainstorm Session

Introduction – Moment to get to know each other: students and tutors.

Note: Conversation focused on favorite sciences topics, scientific background and any other questions they might have.

Brainstorm Session – The students will be encouraged to talk about the scientific topics
they like or dislike the most, and why. The tutors will act as mediators at the beginning and slightly discuss the potential of their ideas, but the goal is to let the students continue by themselves. At the end of the brainstorm session the students should have chosen 2 topics: their main option and their backup plan. They should also have a 10 minutes presentation prepared using the approach they think will be the best.

Day 1 afternoon​: Feedback Session and Script Writing

Feedback Session – The students present their main idea. In case they should reach for the backup plan they have 10 extra minutes to prepare before the second
feedback session.
Script writing – Mentors and student  start together the first sketch of the script and they should go home in the end of the day with the general idea of the video in mind.

Note: The “home work” of the day will be to think about which resources can be fun to use for the next day.

Day 2​: Script Writing and Filming

Final touches for the script writing and hands-on filming. The students will be introduced to frugal filming technics and how to do a lot with just a few resources. This will be a great sciences communication exercise.

Day 3 morning: ​Science Communication Awareness

1h 30min of open discussion about the importance of science communication with a few videos and games.

Day 3 afternoon:​ Filming + Editing

After the Sciences Communication talk time is divided as best as possible between what still needs to be filmed and the actual editing of the video.

Day 4 morning​: Script and Filming Mutual Feedback

(1h 30min) Depending on how things progress, we can give them a feedback about their script writing process and filming. This will also be a moment where they can talk more about the difficulties they had and think about possible solutions.

Day 4 afternoon:​ Editing and Possibly Filming

This day is mainly about editing the video and having time to film again something that might not look good on tape. The schedule should be free so it can be rearranged according to the progress of the workshop.

Day 5:​ Final touches, Subtitles and Last Feedback

If the group had a good interaction through the course of the week, on Friday some final touches should be made for the video editing. Ideally this will give time to let the students write and upload Croatian subtitles, so they can learn the importance of reaching local communities.
The end of this day finishes with a general feedback between tutors and students.

Day 6: Presentation

Presentation of their work during the final science fair showcase.

Potential obstacles
Time: Since filming it’s not just about filming, maybe there won’t be enough time so that
the video turn out the way they imagined it would be. It is important to make them realize
that the goal isn’t to actually do a professional video.
Feedback: Sometimes giving and receiving feedback can be though. This will be
something taken into account by the tutors to make sure no one will be uncomfortable.
